Valor, Passion, Smell of the Rich Earth

This set of six lusty pieces (which can be played individually) is rife with counterpoint. Although by nature these three instruments are unbalanced in acoustical power, musical steps were taken to ensure their equality. For example, in order not to overpower the other instruments, the piano part frequently is either percussive in nature (short duration) or of extremely thin texture (such as single notes constituting a rhythmic bass line). The nature of the writing for the three instruments suggested the tripartite title: the sweeping and swashbuckling of the flute line suggested valor, the deep richness of the viola line suggested passion, and the primitive and elemental sound of the piano line conjured an earthy richness.
