While Children Sleep

Woodwind Quintet
20 minutes | 2002, 2006
Score 43 pages

This playful work in three movements is scored for standard woodwind quintet (flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon). It changes meter with nearly every measure and includes many asymmetrical groupings, and together these pose the greatest challenges to the performers. It was re-barred in 2006 to facilitate counting the irregular groupings. The title refers to the fact that this work was written almost entirely between the hours of midnight and six a.m., when the composer’s children were fast asleep.
