"To the Unknown Region; Quiet Moment"
The title of this work relates to the visual imagery used in performance. "Scenes From the Earth" begins with what looks like a descent into the earth. The viewer is treated to a wide variety of earthly and unearthly scenes, human and animal figures, but is headed ultimately for outer space.
Two hundred forty semi-abstract images were painted by the composer to accompany this work. These help relate the story and were painted on glass or acetate and then converted to photographic transparencies. The images change in rhythmic synchronization with the music. This was the composer’s first multimedia work.
